ABOUT YLS

Our focus is on delivering services that meet the legal needs of young people. In addition to working directly with young people we provide assistance to their families and carers, and we also support others who work with young people in a variety of areas. Our work is guided by principles that are set out in our Service Charter.

Our service charter acknowledges:

the uniqueness and dignity of each person

that justice, truth, integrity and compassion are important principles guiding our service with young people

that young people have a legitimate right to participate in society

that we support the terms of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child

that society, and particularly government, has a special role in encouraging young people to represent their own needs and facilitate a healthy and constructive way for young people to participate within society.

OUR GOAL IS TO:

provide a quality legal service that is sensitive and responsive to the legal and social needs of young people

increase community awareness and understanding of legal issues affecting young people

increase understanding of the legal rights and responsibilities of young people

increase awareness of the role of legal processes and institutions affecting young people

promote concern for social justice and ensure that law and policy are fair and uphold the dignity of young people
